Unlike solid timber with the same dimensions, engineered timber uses fewer natural resources as only the wear layer/veneer is made of solid hardwood timber. Engineered wood flooring boasts other eco-friendly features, including low VOC emissions, a prolonged lifespan, and the potential for recycling or repurposing at the end of its life. The construction of engineered wood flooring involves two main components: a veneer and a reinforced core backing. The veneer, typically crafted from authentic timber like oak, forms the top layer, while the reinforced backing is made from economical and fast-growing timber such as ply, hevea, or pine. The combination of these elements results in individual planks that offer greater strength compared to solid timber boards.
To enhance durability, all floorboards undergo a meticulous process in the factory, including sanding, staining, and sealing. A coating is also applied to protect it from damage and moisture. If glued down, it can have an impressive lifespan, and depending on the veneer thickness, it can be re-sanded up to four times, ensuring longevity and sustainability.
